What is your 10-year risk
of having a heart attack?

Click here for an easy-to-use tool developed by the National Cholesterol Education Program. It was designed for you if you are an adult 20 years of age or older who does not have heart disease or diabetes. To find your risk score, enter your information and click on “Calculate Your 10-Year Risk.”

If you do not have the information requested, see “Good News” for you in the green bar at right. If you have taken a cholesterol test in the past several years, that information (along with your blood pressure) will be available from your records. If you are overdue for a cholesterol check, make an appointment at Pecan Family Medical Centers’ Lab to have one. Truly, in the fight against heart disease, knowledge is your power.

Heed the Warning Signs!*
Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.

Shortness of breath. Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before chest discomfort.

Other symptoms. May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness.

Women! Your most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort, but women are somewhat more likely than men to experience shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
