As we start 2017, Glen Rose Medical Center would like to reflect in several events of the past year. 2016 started out a little rough with the surprise partial payment from our major taxpayer (Luminant), causing a serious budget shortfall. The entire staff at GRMC pulled together by cutting hours, benefits and downsizing departments; we worked together to get thing s done. We worked hard to care for the people that matter most, our patients while never sacrificing quality of care. We can’t thank everyone enough for your continued support.
In January the Dr. Roger E. Marks Healthcare Foundation (REM) elected a new board of directors, eager to begin fundraising to support the Dr. Roger E. Marks Healthcare Foundation Scholarship program and the capital needs of Glen Rose Medical Center.
In February the REM Healthcare Foundation was host to the Kickstart My Heart 1 mile fun run 5k & 10k timed race. The Dr. Roger E. Marks Healthcare Foundation was able to donate proceeds from the race to purchase a Biodex Unweighing Machine for the Outpatient Therapy Department at Glen Rose Medical Center. With the purchase of the Biodex, GRMC was able to expand therapies for patients with paralysis, balance issues, knee and hip replacements. Many thanks to all the sponsors and participants that made this event successful. We look forward to the upcoming race on February 18, 2017.
In April, Glen Rose Medical Center opened a second location for Outpatient Therapy in Pecan Plantation, next door to Pecan Family Medical Clinic. Our therapy department volume has dramatically increased with the second location in Pecan Plantation.
May was another busy month for GRMC due to the election of 5 of 7 seats open on the Somervell County Hospital District Board. After the votes were tallied, 5 new board members were elected, and we welcome their enthusiasm to support GRMC.
In June, partnering with 95.3 KOME we held the second annual Mission 95, Donate Life Day. With the support of our community we were able to donate over 100 pints of blood to Carter BloodCare, saving over 300 lives! Crazy, but all in a days work.
The Dr. Roger E. Marks Healthcare Foundation helped give the Emergency Room at Glen Rose Medical Center a little facelift with a donation of a new exterior Emergency Room sign in September, making the entrance to the lobby of the ER more visible.
October is a busy month in healthcare, at least for GRMC; we volunteer or host several events. GRMC volunteers at the Paluxy Pedal Bike Race, manning a refueling/rest stop for the participants. We usually see well over 200 participants at our stop. The United CO-OP also hosts their annual meeting and health fair in October for employees and CO-OP members. We generally screen a few hundred people and give 200 flu vaccines.
To wrap things up in October, GRMC along with LDL Educational Resources hosted the annual Drive thru Flu, we start bright and early in front of Glen Rose Medical Center with a rambunctious group of GRMC nursing staff, CareFlite volunteers, Glen Rose Nursing and Rehab volunteers, NJHS and NHS students, LDL volunteers and a few other early risers to help keep things running smoothly, after all it takes a village to give over 400 flu shots in a few hours! LDL has sponsored the Drive thru Flu for over 20 years, and we are happy to be a part of it. What an amazing way to give back to our community!
In November the Dr. Roger E. Marks Healthcare Foundation accepted the task of raising $25,000 to purchase a new van for the GRMC SeniorCare Program (an intensive outpatient behavioral health program). Glen Rose Medical Center was the recipient of a grant earlier in the year, but needed matching funds to make the purchase of the van. The REM Healthcare Foundation held the of an annual golf tournament to raise the $25,000. With generous donations from the Glen Rose Lions Club, United Fund of Somervell County, many tournament sponsors and players, the REM Healthcare Foundation met the goal of $25,000. We are appreciative of the work the REM Healthcare Foundation has put in to fundraising this year.
With December comes much to celebrate, and we are happy to have been a sponsor for Fossil Rim Dream Day. GRMC has been a proud sponsor of Dream Day for many years. Each year families of special needs children are given the VIP treatment at Fossil Rim with a behind the scenes tour, gifts and a surprise visit from Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elf. Dr. Condy and the crew at Fossil Rim take exceptional pride in offering these families a wonderful experience and a lifetime of memories, and we are so thankful we get to be a part of that special day.
In closing, we have to celebrate at GRMC; the suit with Luminant was settled allowing us to do what we do best – take care of patients. The REM Healthcare Foundation is in full swing planning great things for 2017. We have an enthusiastic hospital board that is in full support of GRMC. And we are still here! We at GRMC are very proud of all we accomplished as a team and as a community in 2016. We stuck together and are stronger and better because of the trials that faced us. 2017 is going to be a great year!
